The Nutcracker Holiday Spectacular

The Dance Class, in partnership with Arts Milton, have started off this year's Holiday Season with their inaugural performance of The Nutcracker - it was such a privilege and honour to have been invited to record this spectacular event photographically.

Victoria Santaguida and Patric Blain, who's dance education and achievements are far too complex and lengthy to identify here (I'll just say that they're both super talented), played the lead roles of Sugar Plum and Nutcracker.  Sunday's show also included two special guest walk-on parts that were performed by Milton's very own Mayor Gord Krantz and Councillor Colin Best.

This show was very unique, in that it involved the collaborative efforts of various artistic groups throughout the Halton Region, such as:

  • The Dance Class
  • Burlington Dance Company
  • Danse Avec Moi
  • Milton Show Choir
  • Milton Youth Theatre
  • Dance Elite
  • Center Stage School of the Arts
  • Tyler Fergus Magician

While curtain has closed on this year's performance, I really hope this becomes an annual event.  Congratulations to everyone involved - it was a truly fabulous show!!!

Ballet Jörgen - Swan Lake

When Ballet Jörgen invited me to photograph their stage performance of Swan Lake, I had to jump at the opportunity.  This was a beautiful rendition of a classic, and I encourage anyone who enjoys the performing arts to visit http://www.balletjorgencanada.ca and purchase a ticket for a performance at a theatre near you.

One of the most magical and beloved ballets - a story of true love, the union of two souls and the ultimate sacrifice: to be set free.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen production is innovative, awe-inspiring and Bengt Jörgen’s signature hint of Canadian identity adds an engaging touch to the 17th century classic.

You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown

When my good friends at 'First Act Youth Company' invited me to photograph their dress-rehersal of "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown", I jumped at the opportunity.  I must say that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED their performance!!!

2015 ParaSport Festival

ParaSport Ontario held their ParaSport Festival at the Craigleith Ski Club this past Sunday.  The goal of this event was "raise awareness about the many opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities to participate in sport".  It was an exceptional day, many participated (including those who never tried skiing before), and all should be congratulated.

2015 Carving the Future

Presented by the Canadian para-alpine ski program, Carving the Future is an event where athletes have the opportunity to try entry level racing under the guidance of national team coaches.  This program continues to help build the future for para-alpine skiing in Canada.

Ballet Jörgen - The Velveteen Rabbit

Ballet Jörgen invited me to photograph their stage performance of Cinderella.  What a great performance this was!

Dancers bring to life this renowned story of a young boy and his love for a stuffed rabbit that eventually comes to life. Written by Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit was the most popular of her thirty children’s books, and focuses on the importance of friendship, love and the discovery of what is real. As the wise character Skin Horse says, “Real isn’t how you are made. It’s the thing that happens to you. When a child really loves you for a long, long time… then you become real.”
The Velveteen Rabbit was a favourite children’s story for choreographer, Kathleen Rea. She has created a fairy tale work that she hopes will teach children that it’s what’s on the inside of you that’s most important.”

Ballet Jörgen - Cinderella

Ballet Jörgen invited me to photograph their stage performance of Cinderella - I couldn't resist.  This is a definite must see event!!

When Cinderella encounters an old lady, a magic seed and a flock of enchanting fairies, she begins an adventure that will change her life - and upset her snooty stepsisters! Jörgen’s choreography balances fairy tale with contemporary family relationships creating an evening filled with wonder, laughter and love.

TigerFest 2014

What a way to celebrate Canada Day - I attended an absolutely amazing event that was for such a great cause! TIGERFEST was once again at Chinguacousy Park, with this years event in support Osler Foundation's Etobicoke General Hospital, Brampton Civic Hospital and Peel Memorial. If you weren't able to attend this year, ensure you put a placeholder in your calendar for next year.

2014 Ontario ParaSport Games

"Raising the Bar - Together" was the theme of the 2014 Ontario ParaSport Games that took place a couple weeks back.  About 300 Ontario para-athletes, coaches and sport officials participated in medal competitions at various venues across Northumberland County for eight adaptive sports (sledge hockey, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, para-equestrian events, boccia, blind golf, amputee golf and hand cycling) - “For all the athletes, this is the next step towards excellence, and an opportunity to raise the bar to new personal bests, and it definitely establishes Northumberland as a world- class community”.

Organizers hope the Games "will raise awareness of accessibility issues, lower barriers, and encourage more young people with a disability to leave the sidelines and participate in sport and recreation".   ParaSPort Ontario has identified that "in 2012, less than 3 per cent of Canadian children with a disability participated regularly in any form of recreation. After the London Paralympics that year, Canada’s participation rate slipped to 12th from 7th in the world."

"Headliner for the gala was Canadian singer-songwriter Alan Frew of the band Glass Tiger.  Frew co-wrote I Believe, the popular anthem from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics".

It was an amazing Event and I feel privileged and honoured to have been invited to participated!!!  Thank You once again!!!

Ballet Jörgen - The Nutcracker

A few months ago, Ballet Jörgen invited me to photograph their stage performance of The Nutcracket, A Canadian Tradition - it's always a pleasure and an honour to work with such a talented and artistic group.

Their website identifies the following:

"Holiday magic is made year after year by Ballet Jörgen Canada’s traditional treasure The Nutcracker, a Canadian Tradition. Created by acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen to Tchaikovsky’s well-loved score, this delightful classic is a favourite that brings magic to the holidays.

Born from a collaboration with Kleinburg’s world-renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and with well over 100 costumes in richly coloured fabrics, The Nutcracker, a Canadian Tradition brings out the magic of Canada. 20th Century landscapes make up the stunning 30-foot backdrops, including Franklin Carmichael’s Church and Houses at Bisset (1931), Tom Thomson’s Snow in the Woods (1916) and L.L. FitzGerald’s Trees and Wildflowers (1922). This is a beautiful Canadian work, and audiences are taken on Klara’s familiar, magical dream-journey as she arrives in Canada and experiences winter landscapes filled with snowflakes, lumberjacks, Mounties and creatures of the woods."
